ClassNK Cyber Training Linked to Sompo Japan Insurance

A new initiative in Japan is linking seafarer cybersecurity training with marine cyber insurance coverage to address operational and economic risks arising from GPS and other radio-frequency interference.

A seafarer training programme provided through ClassNK Academy by ClassNK has been adopted as an eligibility requirement for new coverage related to radio-frequency interference under Sompo Japan’s marine cyber insurance.

The initiative recognizes that interference with GPS and other systems can disrupt vessel operations even when a vessel suffers no physical damage.

Coverage for Economic Losses Caused by Operational Disruption

GPS and other radio-frequency interference can affect vessel operations and potentially result in consequences such as port-entry restrictions, detention, or delayed departure. The new insurance coverage is designed to address the resulting economic losses.

This represents an important development in maritime cyber risk management, as cyber and electronic interference can generate significant financial consequences without causing physical damage to the vessel.

Seafarer Cybersecurity Training

As part of the scheme, cybersecurity training for seafarers delivered through ClassNK Academy has been adopted as an eligibility requirement for the relevant insurance coverage.

The training covers the fundamentals of cyberattacks as well as practical cybersecurity measures for seafarers, including the safe use of devices and external storage media.

The approach reflects the importance of the human element in maritime cybersecurity. Seafarers interact directly with onboard digital and operational systems, making their cybersecurity awareness an important component of vessel resilience.

Combining Risk Reduction and Insurance

The initiative combines two complementary approaches to maritime cyber risk. Seafarer training aims to reduce cybersecurity risks and improve preparedness for incidents, while insurance provides financial protection against losses when operational disruption occurs.

The combination of cybersecurity education and financial risk transfer demonstrates how maritime organizations can approach cyber risk from both a risk reduction and risk protection perspective.
